Hey World! Remember Me?

I wish with all my heart I had a good excuse as to why I’ve been absent on the blog the last 5 months. The truth is I have been so incredibly busy with editing that I have hardly had time to even think about sitting down to write a blog post, or a newsletter, or even a simple Instagram post. The past year of this business has been an incredible blessing, but it has also been one of the craziest seasons of my life.

Being a small business owner has simultaneously been the most difficult and the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done in my life. Everyday brings both exciting possibilities and difficult challenges. If you asked me 4 years ago if I thought I’d be where I am in this small business of mine today, I would have laughed. That girl — the editor who quit her full-time 9-5 job without any clients and started a business from scratch — she never could have imagined her business growing so much within a couple of years. 500+ catalogs and over 441,000 edited images later, I’m so glad I was able to prove that girl wrong. But it’s still hard…

The Many Hats of Being a Small Business Owner

You see, being a small business owner is something that most people will never understand. Yes, it’s true we have a bit more control over how we spend our time during the week. However, what most people fail to realize is that small business owners sometimes end up working more hours because frequently, we are having to do everything by ourselves. I’m not just an editor with deadlines to keep. I wish that I could just edit all day and close the laptop at 5:00 to spend time with my husband, but the truth is I wear many hats in this small business of mine. I’m an editor, but I also have to do all of my marketing, respond to emails, send invoices, manage catalogs, and keep up with clients. Oh, I’m also a website designer, blogger, and Pinterest-guru…at least I’m expected to be.

There are SO many little details to running a business that nobody ever really sees. That’s why over the last few months, I’ve had to prioritize what responsibilities I’m able to do throughout the week. Catalogs take priority over blogging and posting because my clients always come first. After looking at this year’s catalog count, it’s no wonder why I don’t have time for anything else. I’m nearly at 100 weddings already and 44 of them were in the past 2.5 months alone. That’s kind of remarkably insane to me!

I’m proud of what this business has become, and I know that all of the hours spent editing away on the computer, all of the sleepless nights, and all of the tears haven’t all been for nothing. There’s a purpose behind the madness, and that purpose is to serve others. Whether it’s my photography clients, my editing mentees, or even someone who stumbles upon one of my posts online and becomes inspired, I long to serve. (Seriously, it’s my top love language!) However, over the last few months, I haven’t been able to serve others in the ways that I desperately long to. I want to have more time for education and one-on-one work with editors just getting started in the industry; I want to have more time to send weekly email newsletters with educational resources for subscribers; and I want to have more time to blog. With the amount of editing on my plate this year, I simply haven’t had time to accomplish any of these things.

Big Things are Coming

With this kind of growth, I have realized that my business is drastically changing from what it was four years ago. This is why there has been something BIG in the works behind-the-scenes for the last few months…I am officially expanding the team over here at Emily Moore Boutique Photo Editing! Yep…you read that right. I’m adding a team member and I couldn’t be more excited! I’m opening up the application TOMORROW, so make sure you follow me on Instagram if you’re interested in applying! I’ll be making the announcement there when the application goes live!
