Using Your Tablet

If you have been following me for a while, then you know that I am always singing praises about my Wacom tablet. I try to stress that even though it’s difficult to learn house to use your tablet for editing, you will never want to go back once you get the hang of it! However, I feel that I have failed you, friends. I recently realized that I’ve never explained how I use my tablet to increase my editing speed. Because of this, I have received a lot of requests for a video that demonstrates how I use my tablet for editing. Last week, I was finally able to put this together for you all! In this video, I’m showing you a few different ways you can position your keyboard with your tablet for optimal comfort. These techniques will hopefully help you to speed up your workflow!

Check out my “Importance of Having a Workspace” post to see what my desk normally looks like!

Programming Your Express Keys

In the video, I mention that you can program the buttons on your tablet to do different things. Even though I don’t personally use this, it’s a great feature that could be beneficial for a lot of people! So if you want to learn more about how to program those buttons, you can click here to visit one of Wacom’s blog posts with tutorials explaining how to do that. They also have some other great tutorials in the post that you may be interested in, so make sure you check it out!

Keyboard Commands

One of the reasons my tablet has helped speed up my editing is because I heavily rely on keyboard shortcuts. This technique is particularly helpful when you use Photoshop for editing. However, Lightroom shortcuts are just as effective! If you’re ever unsure about what a tool does in Lightroom, you can hover over it to see if there’s a shortcut. So, for example, if you hover over the crop tool, a box will pop up that says “Crop Overlay (R)”. Since that can get tedious and slow down your workflow, I’ve put together a cheatsheet just for you! This guide includes some of my favorite keyboard shortcuts for Lightroom. Feel free to pin this image for safe keeping!

I used my wacom for many years when I focused on newborns. The brush and being able to control the opacity with pressure was my favorite part when working on clearing up baby skin blotchiness! I don’t use it as much now that I do lifestyle photography because I do a lot less retouching, but any time I retouch, I use it. Thank you for sharing this video! I love your set up with it! It never occurred to me to have the button commands on the opposite side.
